RESPONSIBLE PRODUCTION
Overproduction is a serious issue that is not being discussed enough. According to United States Environmental Protection Agency, around 13 million tons of clothing and footwear were produced in 2018 in the United States alone. Only 1.7 million tons were recycled, 2.2 million tons were incinerated with energy recovery and 9 million tones ended up in landfill.
To reduce the brand's impact on the environment, all items at Alter London are responsibly produced — either made to order or made in small batches, with each piece carefully handmade by Monica in Portugal.
COMMITMENT
Alter London is committed to using only cruelty-free materials and here are the reasons why:

Animal Cruelty - Millions of animals are killed each year for their skin. Leather is not always a by-product, it is not always produced to minimise waste but because it's a highly profitable business. In additional to cows and lambs, animals like deers, pigs, goats, cats, dogs, snakes and crocodiles are also victims of the leather industry.
Environmental Pollution - To turn animal skins into leather, a process called 'tanning' is used, involving heavy chemicals and large amounts of water to permanently alter the skin's protein to make it more durable and less susceptible to decomposition. These chemicals pollute the air, soil, rivers and groundwater, impacting both human and animal population.​
PRODUCT & SHIPPING PACKAGING
Majority of mass-produced fashion items, like clothing, handbags and jewellery, are individually packaged in single-use plastic bags after production to protect them during shipment from the manufacturer to the company. These bags are usually non-recyclable, non-biodegradable, and often end up in landfill or the ocean.​
Alter London is committed to reducing plastic pollution. All our products are packaged in a reusable dust bag or recyclable tissue paper, and we use only paper stuffing when necessary. Our orders are shipped in recyclable cardboard boxes or strong kraft padded envelopes which are filled with cushioning recycled paper fibres instead of bubble wrap, and can be re-used again and again.
We encourage customers to double check product details carefully before making a purchase to avoid returns, reducing packaging waste and carbon emissions from shipping transportation.
